The Cardinall's Musick

Psalms of David

Jubilate Deo a 8
Super flumina Babylonis
Nisi Dominus
Sicut cervus desiderat
Dixit Dominus
Ad Dominum cum tribularer
Laudate Dominum
O clap your hands together
O pray for the peace of Jerusalem; O God the proud are risen
O Lord in thy wrath
O Lord arise
Lord in thy rage; Sing we merrily; Venite exsultemus Domino
Laboravi in gemitu meo
Laudibus in sanctis

Andrew Carwood

The Psalms of David have provided inspiration for countless generations of composers. Sung several times a day during services in the Catholic rite and at the centre of Anglican Mattins and Evensong, they contain all human emotion, from pain and loss to rejoicing and exultation.

This highly successful, award-winning and innovative vocal ensemble performs a programme contrasting European composers including Allegri’s famous Miserere (Psalm 51) and other double-choir pieces by Victoria with more closely-argued pieces by English composers; from the suave Gibbons, to the energetic Weelkes and the ever-inspired William Byrd, the music reflects the wide-range of emotions found in the texts.
