- Mark Austin
- Mari Wynn Williams
Wagner was obsessed with Beethoven. He arranged the ‘Choral’ Symphony for piano, wrote a novella in which Beethoven anointed him his successor, and paid elaborate musical homage over his entire career. This lecture examines the background to Beethoven’s extraordinary influence upon Wagner, considering musical and written documents that permit a deeper understanding of both figures.
Conductor and scholar Mark Austin is able to draw upon his experience on a performer as well as his ongoing research in this area. He is joined by soprano Mari Wynn Williams who will sing musical extracts as part of the lecture.
