Mariinsky Orchestra & Valery Gergiev

Prokofiev: Romeo and Juliet

Venue: Cadogan Hall

Romeo and Juliet (complete ballet score)

Mariinsky Orchestra
Valery Gergiev

Following their sell-out concert in October 2015, Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra return to Cadogan Hall with a complete concert performance of Prokofiev’s glorious ballet score Romeo and Juliet. This concert is a double celebration as 2016 sees both the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare and the 125th anniversary of Sergei Prokofiev.

Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet is one of the world’s best-loved ballets, and its history is inextricably linked with the Mariinsky company which, under its Soviet name Kirov, gave the Russian premiere in 1940 with the legendary ballerina Galina Ulanova as Juliet. Since then the ballet has never been out of the company’s repertoire and the original production, overseen by the composer, is still performed.

Prokofiev’s colourful and lyrical score brings the world of the Montagues and Capulets vividly to life. Bursting with memorable scenes and ravishing melodies, Prokofiev’s orchestra depicts the whole cast of Shakespeare’s characters from the innocent wonderment of the young Juliet and the proud, haughty grandeur of the Capulets in their famous ball to the bustling market scenes where youthful high jinx suddenly turn into deadly combat. In the famous Balcony Scene, Prokofiev perfectly captures the awakening passion of the young lovers and the sheer rapture of falling in love.
