Gardner, who once tried to teach Paul McCartney about composition, was a prolific English composer whose influences ranged from polyphony to Stravinsky to Bill Evans, and who is best known for his setting of the carol Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day.

Born on 2 March 1917, he was one of an illustrious succession of composers who were Director of Music at St Paul’s Girls’ School. This evening the English Chamber Orchestra will be playing their music too, under the baton of Hilary Davan Wetton, Director of Music at St Paul’s from 1979 to 1994.

This concert also showcases two City Music Foundation artists, oboist Hannah Morgan and recorder player Tabea Debus.

Herbert Howells’ gorgeous but rarely heard Elegy, composed in 1917 in memory of a violist friend killed in the Great War, will be played by Lawrence Power.
