Verdi’s Il trovatore (The Troubadour) is an opera in four acts and was written in 1853 to an italian libretto largely written by Salvadore Cammarano, which was based on the play El Trovador (1836) by Antonio Garcia Gutiérrez and described as ‘a high flown, sprawling melodrama flamboyantly defiant of the Aristotlan unities, packed with all manner of fantastic and bizarre incident’.

One of Verdi’s most popular and successful operas, illustrated by appearing at number 20 (with 190 performances) on the Operabase list of the most performed operas worldwide from the 2008-09 season to the end of the 2012-13 season.
